Portishead Pilot Gig Club attended Salcombe Estuary Rowing Club’s annual regatta on Sunday 2 nd June. The picturesque location in South Devon started off a little damp with heavy downpours early on in the day. The weather conditions were far from favourable with driving rain at times and found crews battling strong winds and tidal currents, however the sunshine came out eventually and a great day was had by all.
This event was the first opportunity to race Blacknore following the club’s recent success at the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly.
The regatta was well attended with good representation from around Devon and further afield. Racing started from Salcombe Yacht Club and headed out towards the mouth of the estuary, following the kite shaped course before heading back up the estuary to the Yacht Club towards the finish line.
Despite the poor weather for most of the day, the atmosphere was buoyant with many of the fourteen clubs huddled under gazebos trying to stay dry. The vantage point from Cliff House Gardens provided great views to watch the days racing. Salcombe Rowing Club took advantage of their home waters to secure a well-deserved overall win.
Well done to everyone who took part.
